Snapchat Hacks: How to Become a Snapchat Guru

At this point, everyone considers themselves a Snapchat Pro – a professional selfie taker, a creative genius with a Snapchat pen, and a guru in the fine art of looking good with the old reliable dog filter.

But have you ever considered that maybe – just maaaybe – it could be possible to up your snap game to the next level? I’m talking ‘Kylie Jenner minus the annoying car miming videos’ next level? Here’s 8 tips to do exactly that!

1. Hands-Free Snapping

Ever see someone record videos without holding their thumb down on the screen? Now YOU can be as cool as they think they are! Go to Settings > General > Accessibility, and turn on Assistive Touch so a small dot icon appears on-screen. Then click Create New Gesture and hold your finger down til the blue bar along the bottom maxes out after 10 seconds. Save and name this new gesture as something memorable like ‘Snapchat’.

Now open Snapchat, tap the Assistive Touch icon and find your ‘Snapchat’ gesture under Custom. Select and drag the little black icon onto the Snapchat record button and it should record a 10-second video totally hands-free. Look Mom, no hands!

2. Bitmoji with a Buddy

Bitmojis might just be the best things ever invented. But did you know you can send Bitmoji stickers that feature you AND your friend? Simply double tap on a friend from your Chat list to launch the camera, snap a pic, and explore your Bitmoji stickers to see you and your friend do everything from high-fiving and piggybacking, to dabbing and chilling in a giant hot dog.

Note: Both you and your friend need to have your Bitmoji accounts linked to your Snapchat accounts. If you don’t have a Bitmoji account, simply download the free Bitmoji app from the App or Play Store, create an avatar, and link it to your Snapchat account under ‘Bitmoji’ in your Snapchat Settings.

3. Hidden Pastel Colours

At this stage, we all know our way around the Snapchat pen tool, and that dragging your finger from the palette to the leftmost side of the screen discovers the greyscale pen, right? Well, lucky iOS users have hidden pastel colours in there too.

Hold your finger on the palette to select a colour and slide it directly horizontal to the point juuust before it turns the pen tool white to find a pastel version of your original colour. To find the other pastels, start your finger on a different colour on the palette and slide left as you did before to find pale pink, powder blue, lilac and more!

4. More Detailed Drawings

While we’re on the topic of colour, here’s one for all you dedicated Picassos out there. For once off Snapchat masterpieces, iOS users should go to Settings > General > Accessibility, and enable Zoom. Android users should launch Settings > Accessibility > Vision, and enable Magnification Gestures.

Back in Snapchat with the pen tool selected, you should now be seeing a zoom window you can draw into for more detail. And when you move the window around, your drawing should appear as normal. Goodbye Sausage Fingers. Hello freaky Mona Lisa masterpieces!

5. Throwback to Old Lenses

Snapchat is constantly rotating in and out old and new lenses, and if your favourite lens is no longer available, have no fear. For iOS users, go to Settings > General > Date & Time, disable the Set Automatically function and simply enter the date that offered the lenses you want. For Android users, go to Settings > Date & Time, disable the Automatic Date & Time function and set the date accordingly. Relaunch Snapchat and hey presto, the lenses of Snapchats past have returned once more!

6. Custom Filters using Emojis

Not a fan of Snapchat’s standard filters and want to create your own? Just get creative with emoji stickers. After you’ve taken a picture, apply an emoji from your stickers menus and keep zooming in and pushing the emoji to the corner til its pixelated, semi-transparent edges covers your whole screen. Try layering multiple emojis as seen below for different effects too! Welcome to the World of Custom Filters, my friend!

7. Custom Borders using Letters

Adding different shaped borders to your photos on Snapchat can really help them look the part. To do this, type a letter (O and U work great – see below!), click the T icon to enlarge it and zoom it out all the way until it creates a border around your snap. Start adding different coloured letters to switch it up too. Instagram Squaready, meet Snapchat Letters.

8. Save Your Data

And finally, and possibly the most useful Snapchat hack of all: if you’re someone who’s forever running out of data, Travel Mode is the way to go. Go to your Snapchat Settings > Manage Preferences, and enable Travel Mode to reduce the amount of mobile data Snapchat uses. Rather than automatically loading snaps, you’ll have to tap to load each one manually – but it’s a small price to pay to keep your data alive and kicking.

And that’s it! Implement these 8 simple tips and you’ll be even more of a Snapchat Guru than you already are! Note the above features are only available for Snapchat updated since 18 November 2016 (Ver 9.43.2.0 on iOS / Ver 9.43.50 on Android).

10 Tech Products to Look Out For In 2017

Let’s be honest, we’re all glad to see the back of 2016. With endless celebrity deaths, political chaos, killer clowns, bottle flipping, and an excessive amount of dabbing, it all got a little… weird. But thankfully, we’re now at the start of a brand new year, and with so many product launches in the world of technology to come over the next 12 months, here are a few we’re particularly looking forward to!

1. Nintendo Switch

Since unveiling its next generation console back in October 2016, Nintendo has claimed it has ‘reinvented gaming’ with the Nintendo Switch – a hybrid console capable of converting from a traditional home console into a portable handheld device with detachable controllers and an at-home dock. The launch of the Switch will mark four years since Nintendo’s last console release, and the company is betting big on its success, since its current console, the Wii U, only sold 13.6 million units compared to the original Wii, which exceeds 100 million unit sales to date. The price of the Switch will be announced at a Nintendo event later this month and will be available from this March. Gamers at the ready!

2. iPhone 8

2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, and because of this, some think Apple will skip the half-step S model and call its new release the iPhone 8 and/or the iPhone X. The new edition to the iPhone family is also rumoured to feature a curved glass shape, an edge-to-edge screen, long range wireless charging, the replacement of the Home button with an embedded fingerprint sensor, and an all-new Red colour – alongside the current Rose Gold, Gold, Silver, Black and Jet Black colours. All will be revealed in September 2017.

3. Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung had a fairly rough year in 2016, with the minor issue of its Galaxy Note 7 phablets spontaneously bursting into flames. No biggie. However, 2017 could see the rehabilitation of the company’s reputation, with the release of the upcoming Galaxy S8 at the Mobile World Congress this February. The phone will feature an all-new virtual assistant, and rumours also suggest a second rear camera, dual speakers, a super-high-res 4K display, an iris scanner, the removal of the Home button and earphone jack, AND the potential for world’s first bendable smartphone screen, as seen in Samsung recently filed patents. As long as it doesn’t blow up, we’ll be happy.

4. Windows 10 Creators Update

Windows 10’s newest iteration is called the Creators Update and will be available from this April. And good news, it’s completely FREE. The upgrade will fully embrace genuinely mind-blowing 3D technology that the company has created in secret over the past few years: with 3D scanning using your smartphone, a brand new 3D version of Paint, an updated PowerPoint with 3D clip art and graphics, and will even allow for simple HoloLens integration (see below). Get ready to get creative!

5. Microsoft HoloLens

HoloLens is Microsoft’s crazy futuristic ‘mixed reality’ goggles that project 3D holograms into your field of vision. The company released a developers version of the headset to a select number of companies last March for a small fee for $2,999… However while Microsoft has confirmed it is still hard at work refining the product, it was revealed this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that it is teaming up with Dell, Acer, HP, Lenovo and 3DGlasses to release their own headsets based on Microsoft’s HoloLens technology over the next few months, starting at just $299. So whichever headset tickles your fancy, be sure to give HoloLens technology a go if you ever get the chance! We know we will!

6. Nokia Smartphones

Nokia is back! Since Microsoft sold Nokia Technologies to FIH Mobile and HMD Global in June 2016, the company has been working on three budget-priced Android smartphones set for launch this year. The Nokia D1C is rumoured to come in two size variants – a 5-inch with a 13-megapixel camera, and a 5.5-inch with an impressive 16-megapixel camera. Both versions will feature 64GB of internal storage at a surprisingly affordable price range of €150-€250. Its second device Nokia C1 will reportedly feature 128GB of internal storage at a higher price, whereas its third device and the specific specs of all three devices are being kept under wraps for now. Here’s hoping this marks the second coming of the indestructible Blokia 3310.

7. Google Smartwatches

2016 saw the launch of a new range of hardware devices ‘Made By Google’ – from the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones, the Daydream View virtual reality goggles, Google Home smart speaker, Google Wifi modular routers and the Chromecast Ultra video streamer – and Google plans to continue this trend in 2017 with the release of its own-brand smartwatches codenamed Angelfish and Swordfish. The Angelfish will be the premium version of the two, with 4G cellular connectivity and GPS, whereas the Swordfish will be smaller, thinner and without cellular connectivity. Both devices will feature a crown button on the left, a small shoulder button on top, and can be customised with the standard Android Wear ‘MODE’ range of snap-and-swap watch bands. Price points, release dates and further specs have yet to be confirmed, but stay tuned for more.

8. Xbox Project Scorpio

Dubbed the Xbox 2: Project Scorpio, Microsoft is expected to release its most powerful gaming console ever. It has been revealed that the console is almost 5% more powerful than its main competitor, the Playstation 4 Pro, and an impressive 350% more powerful than Microsoft’s current console, the Xbox One. It will be the first console to play true 4K games, which not even the PS4 Pro can do, and is expected to be compatible with virtual reality (VR) and Xbox One content. With an anticipated release in November 2017, the console is expected to cost between $500-$600.

9. More Nintendo Smartphone Apps

2016 was a great year for Nintendo, as it ventured into the mobile gaming market, with smash releases Pokémon Go and Super Mario Run both topping the App Store charts around the world. And there’s plenty more to come, as Nintendo revealed plans to bring its Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem franchises to Apple and Android devices sometime this year. This is in line with Nintendo’s goal “to have multiple types of apps that appeal to different audiences and different groups of players”, as highlighted in its earnings report from 2016. Watch the space for more Nintendo fun!

10. Fitbit

And finally, the humble Fitbit! Fitbit currently dominates the high-tech wearables market, and since setting up in Dublin last August, its popularity has soared, now with a market share of 25%. The company launch a new fitness tracker every year, but this year could see something a little different, as it has recently revealed it is “exploring new form factors for its products”. While we’re not exactly sure what this could lead to, it is likely that the company may be branching beyond fitness trackers you wear on your wrist.

And that’s it! Between new smartphones from Apple, Samsung and Nokia, new consoles and software from Nintendo and Microsoft, and Google and Fitbits’ new ventures in wearable tech, 2017 is set to be an exciting year in the world of technology.
